The fourth article in the series of Breakthroughs in Bioscience, this short paper provides an overview of molecular and cellular events that lead to the commonest and one of the most lethal of diseases -- atherosclerosis. It details the mechanisms involved in the origin of this disease and the risk factors involved in its development, factors familiar to any health worker -- high cholesterol intake, age, diabetes, hypertension, a family history of the disease and, of course, smoking.
