This article lists and refutes with pertinent data some of the "myths and fables," as Ehrlich puts it, about population and food, atmosphere and climate, toxic substances, and economics and the environment. In a concluding section he reminds us that there is only one planet, on which we are placing intolerable pressures which he characterizes as "a vast and dangerous experiment."
