Letters to the Editors

Paul DeHart Hurd, noting the continuing debate about scientific literacy on page 3 of our Fall 1996 issue, sent us a letter and reprints of three articles recalling his coinage of the concept in an article published in the October 1958 issue of Educational Leadership (as reported on page 6 of our Fall 1992 issue). In his letter, Hurd added that, in a subsequent article in the January 1970 issue of The Science Teacher, he sought to change the concept from "scientific literacy" to "scientific enlightenment." His third article, which appeared in the Bulletin of Science, Technology, and Society, reexamined the concept of "scientific literacy." (Apparently, the first term he coined had more sticking power than his own attempt to change it.)

From the E-mail bag came kudos from Jane Abbott, who said our fall issue "packs a wallop with the special STS-12 section in the middle." She also applauded Bunny Hauser's discussion of implementing the National Science Education Standards in the primary grades and added that she never throws any issues of the Newsletter away. Jane concluded that she had "put a mental string on my finger to remind me to send in my subscription." Also writing in conjunction with "sending in her subscription" was Janet Castellini, who recalled enjoying a meeting of the Triangle Coalition with Nancy Van Vranken.

Have you "sent in your subscription"? This is the last issue you will receive if there is not a number "97" or greater on your mailing label. So please check: if you have a "96" on your label, you will need to renew your subscription in order to keep receiving the Newsletter. A convenient form is provided in this issue.
