EXXON energy cube3 now available in 24 states and DC
On 15 November 1996 Kim Eveleth of Ken Kansas Communications spoke to the Physics and Chemistry Teachers Clubs of New York about historical and recent development of the EXXON energy cube3, an energy curriculum piloted from 1987 through 1990 in SC, TX, and FL and now available to schools in AL, AK, AR, CA, CO, DC, DE, GA, LA, MD, MT, NJ, NY, NM, NC, OK, PA, TN, VA, WV, WI, and WY, whose teachers participate in a six-hour workshop. Originally developed by educators Lynn Glass, Ron Cleminson, Donna Bogner, and Thomas Liao, the cube3 was revised in 1996 to respond to the National Science Education Standards. Liao, who also was a principal coauthor of the New York State Math-Science-Technology Framework, has also established a correspondence between the NYS Framework and cube3 materials.
Housed in a physical cube, the cube3 materials include videotapes, posters, student activities, a datafile, and lesson plans which are organized around nine teaching units: Petroleum and Other Fuels, Alternative Energy, Change: Energy and Physics, Discovery: Energy and Earth Science, Growth: Energy and Biology, Structure: Energy and Chemistry, Choices: Energy and Society, Principles: Energy and Science, and Choosing Tomorrow. The videos were produced by the South Carolina Educational Television Network.
To find out about when cube3 workshops will be held, call (800)-883-3656. For teachers in the New York City area, several cube3 workshops have already been held -- with 90 teachers attending one at Liberty Science Center, and 290 teachers trained on Election Day. Efforts are underway to arrange for a workshop to be offered at the 1997 SCONYC Conference, scheduled for 22 March. If your school has not claimed the cube3 already reserved for it by sending a teacher to a workshop, this could be your chance.
