CSICOP receives funding to develop Science KitsAnthony C. Battaglia, Associate Director of Development for CSICOP -- The Committee for the Scientific Investigation of Claims of the Paranormal -- has announced that his organization has secured funding from the Stella and Charles Guttman Foundation to launch its Science Kit Project, which will be supervised by Dr. Joe Nickell, CSICOP's Chief Research Fellow.
The intended kits will contain high-quality, age-appropriate materials which can easily be incorporated into existing science curricula at the elementary level, strengthening the teacher's ability to introduce solid scientific practice and help students differentiate scientific claims from pseudoscientific or antiscientific ones. Among these materials are audiovisual instructional tools as well as lesson outlines, make-it-take-home projects, worksheets, curriculum guides, and research background to support ongoing explorations.
Pilot testing and development will involve a target audience of sixth to eighth graders in up to 20 school systems. Kits should be in the hands of pilot phase teachers within six months. It is hoped that participation by more than one teacher of a sc hool system will enhance the evaluation process. If you are interested in the project and perhaps even in participating in the evaluation of the kits, contact Battaglia at CSICOP, P.O.
