Anne Platt McGinn, "Blue Revolution: the Promises and Pitfalls of Fish Farming," World.Watch, 11-19 (Mar/Apr 98).This article is both a history of aquaculture, which originated in China, and a description of the current state of the industry, worldwide. Aquaculture is one of the fastest growing sectors of food production at a time when the world's fishing fleets have suffered catastrophic losses and ocean fish stocks have been depleted dramatically. There are many problems inherent in fish farming: reliance on wild stocks to supply "seed" fish, pollution of water supplies and surrounding land, outbreaks of disease and their possible spread to wild stocks. These and other drawbacks are discussed in detail, as are also the considerable advantages.
