2. Michael J. Daley, Carol Wilson, Diane Brancazio, Barbara Slaiby, and Doug McDonald, Getting Around Without Gasoline (Northeast Sustainable Energy Association, 50 Miles St., Greenfield, MA 01301, (413)-774-6051, FAX: (413)-774-6053)."This lesson set focuses on transportation -- the major polluter and user of oil in the United States." It contains eight lessons developed for sixth to eighth graders, oriented toward achieving the goal expressed in the title. In the first five lessons students are asked to identify the roles and sources of energy in their lives, the amounts of energy used by different regions of the world, the role played by transportation in providing goods and services, the environmental impact of various modes of transportation, and the cost of these modes of transportation. The last three lessons are more summative in nature, asking students to design their own vehicle and a city -- and finally select a project that will make a difference in their community.
Each lesson contains both teacher directions and student worksheets. There is also a glossary and a list of further resources oriented toward eliminating the major user of oil in the U.S.
