Videotapes of Pfizer Workshops Available
In New York City the Pfizer Corporation sponsored a series of five lecture/workshops -- "Microbe Mondays" -- between 23 February and 20 April 1998. Each session focused on a facet of modern bacteriology, as follows:
1. "Ring Around the Rosies: How the Bubonic Plague and Other Microbe-Borne Diseases Have Shaped the Course of Human History."
2. "Penicillin: the Revolutionary Discovery, Development, and Use of the First 'Wonder Drug.'" This lecture was accompanied by a Teacher's Curriculum Guide, Yellow Magic: The Story of Penicillin, published by the Brooklyn Historical Society, 128 Pierrepont St., Brooklyn, NY 11201.
3. "Sludge-Busters: Using Microbes to Clean Up the Environment."
4. "Watch What You Eat!" -- a workshop highlighting microbes in food.
5. "Mutating Microbes! How Do Microbes Develop Resistance to Antimicrobal Drugs? How Do Researchers Combat Drug Resistance and Find New Cures?"
There was ample opportunity to ask questions during the presentations. All the workshops were videotaped, and teachers interested in these topics may contact Rick Luftglass at Pfizer's Corporate Center, 235 East 42 St., New York, NY, (212)-733-6934.
