James Trefil, The Edge of The Unknown: 101 Things You Don't Know About Science And No One Else Does Either (Houghton Mifflin, Boston, 1996). 355 pp. $23. ISBN 0-395-72862-2.
Divided into chapters starting with The Top Ten Problems In Science, then continuing through the Physical Sciences, Astronomy and Cosmology, Earth and Planetary Sciences, Biology, Medicine, Evolution, and Technology, this book lists, in each chapter, some of the most perplexing and, until now, unsolved and ananswered puzzles in science. Each query is set forth in no more than two or three pages. It is therefore a delightful book to dip into during leisure moments -- a perfect bedside table book. Leon Lederman's characterization of the book as "instant science literacy" is on target!
