6. Mary Love Good, "A Second American Century? Opportunities and Challenges In the 21st Century," Chemical and Engineering News, 75(15), 39-45 (14 Apr 97).In her Priestley Medal Address to the American Chemical Society, the Undersecretary of Commerce for Technology reviews the achievements which have made the twentieth century an "American Century" and ponders what is needed to do the same for the twenty-first. She sees the global marketplace as the "new battlefield" replacing the Cold War and lemtns that our precollege educational system is not adequately preparing people to participate in it. Most particularly, she reopens the question of whether we're preparing enough personnel trained for scientific and technological careers (see, for example, page 26 of our Fall 1993 issue). In at least one sector we are falling short: Good cites a survey by the Information Technology Association of America that "there are now 190,000 unfilled infotech jobs in the U.S. due to a shortage of qualified workers."
