34. Art to Zoo: Teaching with the Power of Objects, "Visions of the Future: Technology and American Society," Office of Elementary and Secondary Education, Smithsonian Institution, March/April 1995. 16 pp.
The Art to Zoo series of the Smithsonian are single-issue pamphlets offering lesson plans, take-home pages, and other information on the chosen topic. The approach is interdisciplinary and multicultural and the avowed purpose of the series is to help teachers bring into their classrooms the educational power of museums and other community resources. Many issues are in both Spanish and English. This issue focuses on how technology has changed our world. It compares predictions of the future with the reality. A second lesson asks students to predict how science-based technology might be used in the future. The unit closes with a study of mo dern science-based material, a study which is extended with a take home page appropriate for students in grades 3-8 to identify such materials in their own environment. Art to Zoo subscriptions are free to teachers, and classroom quantities are available within limits.
