28. Scientific American, Science and the Arts (1995).
This is a slim magazine-size collection of articles published in Scientific American between 1958 and 1994. For the interdisciplinary devotee there is everything from "Escher's Metaphors" to "The Acoustics of the Singing Voice," and "Paradoxes of Musical Pitch" to the "Restoration of Medieval Stained Glass." For the devoted musician there is also "The Physics of Violins" and "Playing the Baroque Trumpet." The volume ends with "Pictorial Perception and Culture," which attempts to determine whether people of one culture perceive a picture differently from people of another. Experiments show that the answer, apparently, is "yes."
