17. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Addressing Emerging Infectious Disease Threats: A Prevention Strategy for the United States, CDC Mailstop C14, 1600 Clifton Road, Atlanta, GA 30333, 1994. 46 pp.

There have been major changes in the infectious diseases picture in the U.S. as elsewhere. Movies and books have played up the threat which is due to the many factors we have to take into account in any plan to prevent the emergence and spread of infections. As the booklet states, "Worldwide, there is explosive population growth with expanding poverty and urban migration; international travel is increasing, and technology is rapidly changing -- all of which affect our risk of exposure to the infectious agents with which we share our environment."

The strategic plan detailed in this booklet emphasizes surveillance, applied research, prevention and control, and the strengthening of the infrastructure required to support the plan.
