If a river flows through your community, you might be interested in The Rivers Curriculum Project of Southern Illinois University. Aimed at "Increasing the Scientific Literacy of High School Students Through River Study," the Rivers Project began in 1990 as a pilot program involving eight high schools along the Mississippi and Illinois Rivers. Data on water samples collected and analyzed by students are transmitted to the Environmental Management Technical Center, which is a division of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Center. The study extends to include historical, social, and/or economic implications of the river conditions, thus becoming interdisciplinary. Internet and the World Wide Web link all the participating schools with each other and Project He adquarters.
